Introduction

my recent article , "Challenge at 50: Why I decided to start hosting Airbnb Experiences in Naoshima ," I explained the background of why I decided to start hosting Airbnb Experiences in Naoshima.

This time, as a continuation of that, I would like to talk about the "teaser video" we created for Airbnb Experiences and the intention behind it

I hope that reading this article will give you a better understanding of what they value about their Airbnb experience and the perspective they want you to have when walking around Naoshima

The teaser video intentionally does not include much explanation

This is because it was not created as an introductory video for a tourist spot, but as an "entrance to experience the atmosphere of Naoshima."

Naoshima has many quiet places that are not listed in guidebooks.
These places are different from the famous spots, but they certainly have a "Naoshima-like atmosphere."

In my Airbnb experience (Naoshima Course), I want you to experience its quiet charm as you walk with me

I was not a tourist, an artist, or even a so-called guide

I spent a long time on Naoshima, almost in the position of "protector" and "watcher" of the artwork

Walking the same roads, passing the same artworks, and looking at the same sea every day...
As days go by like this, the way you see the scenery will gradually change.

Even though it was a place that tourists would pass right by, to me, who studied art in high school, it naturally appeared as a place with artworks

There have been times when I have noticed later that places that people would say "there's nothing here" actually housed works by artists I encountered while living abroad

There were many such "moments of connection" on Naoshima

I don't intend to give a lecture on art during this Airbnb experience

It's not about whether you have knowledge or not, but
I'd be happy if you could share that feeling of "I'm somehow curious" or "I can't put it into words but it stays in my mind.

During the Airbnb experience, we will not only look at the artwork itself, but also pay close attention to the atmosphere and distance of the artwork, in relation to its location

The art gathered on Naoshima is not just found in museums.
There is also a lot of art that is part of daily life on the island and blends into the scenery.

  • For those who are not satisfied with just famous spots
  • People who find travelling more enjoyable when they know the background of a place
  • Those who value the atmosphere they felt at the time more than the photos
  • Those who are also interested in the charm of a quiet island

If any of these apply to you, we're sure you'll enjoy a new side of Naoshima

Naoshima is known as a glamorous tourist destination, but if you take a quiet stroll around the area, you'll find many small discoveries hidden behind the scenes

This teaser video was created as a starting point,
so if you're interested, we encourage you to explore the area with us as part of an Airbnb experience.
