I have traveled to various locations on rainy days to film videos for
, Setouchi Ambience . I continue filming with the desire to deliver the sound of rain echoing through the quiet Japanese landscape in the highest possible quality.
However, there was one problem that always bothered me:
my own footsteps
The better the microphone's performance, the more it picks up even the faintest sounds of footsteps and the rustling of clothes. While this can be reduced in post-production editing, it inevitably detracts from the natural, realistic feel. That's why I've been searching for shoes that make almost no footsteps, even when walking in the rain.
Rainy day photography and shoe selection
The reason I avoid sneakers on rainy days is simple:
the rain soaks into your shoes and socks, making you feel more and more uncomfortable over time.
To comfortably shoot for long periods of time, shoes with high waterproof performance are essential.
The first ones I used were
MERPHINE rain shoes They looked good and were reasonably priced.
However, after walking for a long time, the shoes began to absorb a small amount of water, and a small squeaking noise began to be heard with each step.
As someone who wants to make the delicate sound of rain the main focus, this sound was impossible to ignore.
I shot this video of rain in Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture
Next challenge: Complete protection with shoe covers
Next, I tried out the Satipro shoe covers, which have passed the domestic waterproofing test .
These are designed to be worn over your familiar sneakers, and they're great for walking around without getting your shoes or socks wet.
The waterproofing of my feet was perfect, so I was able to concentrate on shooting without worry, even in the heaviest rain.
However, this time I noticed a "crunching" sound, like vinyl rubbing against each other every time I walked.
Some of you watching the video may have thought, "This sound is a bit bothersome." The
Yashima and Yoshima using these shoe covers .
And then I came across "silent shoes"
After much trial and error, I finally found my current favorite, the Margo waterproof shoes .
They're surprisingly affordable, and even when walking on paved roads, they barely make a sound.
They're not completely silent, but they're much quieter than traditional rain shoes.
It feels like the only sound is the sound of the rain dissolving into the air.
Of course, there is some noise on the ground, but on asphalt, "it feels like your footsteps have disappeared."
I've filmed some of my latest videos wearing these shoes.
I highly recommend these shoes to anyone who wants to make the sound of rain the main focus, or who is filming ASMR.
There are several videos I have taken wearing these shoes, but in this article I will introduce this one.
summary
When shooting, small elements such as the sound of shoes can greatly affect the overall impression of the work.
"Finding shoes that don't make noise" is a small detail I have taken into consideration as I value sound, but it ultimately helped me to convey the rainy scene itself more beautifully.
Behind the seemingly mundane task of filming the sound of rain, there is a lot of trial and error -
I hope you enjoy the world of "Setouchi Ambience," including that process.
