Okunoshima Island lies almost in the center of the Seto Inland Sea. Also known as "Rabbit Island" by both domestic and international travelers, I visited this island with a specific "purpose."
The goalwas to record the sound of rain.
Not just any rain, but rain that was definitely falling.
The reason is that my home prefecture of Kagawa has a Setouchi climate, which means rain forecasts are often inaccurate, and going there with my camera equipment only to find nothing is too risky. In
contrast, Hiroshima Prefecture has had a relatively large amount of rain this year, and reliable rainfall was predicted at just the right time.
Access: Setouchi Journey
The itinerary this time was a bit complicated, but the journey itself was also part of the fun
- From Sakaide Station, use JR Shikoku's "S Ticket" to take the express train to Imabari Station
- From Imabari Station, take the express bus heading towards Innoshima and get off at Omishima Interchange
- Walk for a few minutes to reach Roadside Station Tatara Shimanami Park
- From here, we will head to Moriko Port using a shared bicycle from HELLO CYCLING
At this point, I still thought I had plenty of time before the ferry
An unexpected happening
However, I got lost along the way and arrived at the port just before the ferry departed.
I managed to board the ship in a panic...and then, immediately afterwards...
"...Huh? My equipment is gone!"
I madeand left all my camera equipment in the basket of my bicycle.
I frantically explained the situation to the crew and had to turn back to the port from the ferry, which was already preparing to depart. Realizing
I couldn't get on that ferry, I decided to try again on the next one.
We finally landed, but the rain stopped.
We returned to the port once again and finally made it to Okunoshima Island safely.
However, by the time we arrived, the peak of the rain had just passed.
Having no other choice, I opened the Yahoo Weather app on my smartphone and stared at the rain cloud radar. Fortunately, after a while, the rain clouds approached again. Finally, I succeeded in capturing the scene of the rabbits amidst the quiet sound of the rain, which was my original goal
About this video
In the video, the tranquility of the island, the rabbits grazing, and the gentle sound of falling rain create a dreamlike atmosphere.
This is a video you should definitely watch with headphones on.
The thumbnail was created using generative AI.
The thumbnail for this YouTube video was created using an AI-generated image , based on advice from ChatGPT . We made an effort to visually complement the atmosphere of the "fantastical rabbit and rainy island," which is difficult to capture in live-action footage. We hope you enjoy the contrast between the thumbnail and the actual video.
Afterword
I never imagined I'd forget my equipment on Okunoshima Island, where I went hoping for rain, but ultimately, this trip turned out to be a memorable and important day.
I hope to continue capturing rain, silence, and the little dramas of travel on video.
